Programming Tools for 20M Students
Building the coding tools — App Lab, Sprite Lab, and Game Lab — behind Code.org's K-12 student experience.
From 2021 to 2022, I was a Product Manager at Code.org, focused on the programming tools behind the K-12 student experience — App Lab, Sprite Lab, and Game Lab, the editors and creative environments that roughly 20 million students a year used to write their first lines of code.
I partnered with design, curriculum, and engineering teams to create experiences that delight both students and educators. It’s a special kind of product problem: your users range from kindergartners to high school seniors to the teachers guiding them, and the goal isn’t engagement for its own sake — it’s genuine learning and creative confidence.
Fittingly, the seed for this work was planted early: at a Three Day Startup hackathon back in 2014, the idea I pitched was combining storytelling and coding to make computer science more accessible for kids. I wrote about that experience here.
